    We all have several basic physical needs that must be taken care of before any others.

    Beyond the physical needs are safety and security . We all want to feel safe and secure and that can be provided by preventing accidents and providing a safe environment. Also, a client's personal beliefs or religious needs are to be respected regardless of your own personal beliefs.

    We all want to feel loved and feel that we are wanted and belong. It is important that your client maintains their identity. Include them in daily decisions and praise them for a job well done.

    You want your client to think and feel good about themselves. Their self-esteem is very important. They want others to think well of them. It is really our own perception of self-worth that matters.

    The last need is self-actualization and that involves reaching our full potential and being able to deal with the problems confronting us.

    When a client's needs are not met, this can affect a client's mental health and may result in an emotional "roller coaster" effect.
