    Patrick Duran is the CEO of Pronto Custom Shirts, a business that makes custom-designed shirts for events. This past year Pronto Custom Shirts had a net income of $334,000. Net income is how much money a business takes in after all expenses. Patrick sets a net income goal of $400,000 for next year. He sells his shirts for $15, and each shirt costs $6.50 to make on average considering the variable costs of buying the un-printed shirt, the labor, etc. The fixed expenses, including the screen printing machine, rent, air conditioning, among others, total $127,000. He is using the following equation to determine net income:

The challenge faced by the owner of Pronto Custom Shirts can be solved using a multi-step equation. A   multi-step equation   is an equation that requires more than two steps to solve for the variable. These equations often involve combining like terms and " data-term="Parentheses" role="term" tabindex="0"> parentheses . In this example, you will be dealing with like terms. To solve an example with like terms, combine the like terms and solve the resulting equation.

Just think of all the equations you have seen, like Density = Mass Volume   and  Speed = Distance Time .  These are examples of one-step equations , but now that you know how to solve multi-step equations you will begin to see a lot more of them. One such equation is used to convert Celsius into Fahrenheit. Celsius is the temperature scale used outside of the United States and is the agreed-upon temperature scale used by all scientists.  If you see a temperature in Fahrenheit and want to convert it to Celsius, one method  is to use the formula :

    When solving a multi-step equation with parenthesis, there are two approaches: you can distribute the number outside the parenthesis with the expression inside the parenthesis, or you can divide the equation by that number. Remember that dividing is the same as multiplying by the reciprocal .

    In a situation like this where there is a constant on one side, and there is one term with an expression in parenthesis on the other side, the division approach is easier. However, if there are more terms , the distribution approach will likely be easier.

    You  can’t combine like terms if one term is in parenthesis and one term is outside of those parentheses , y ou must first eliminate the parenthesis. Dividing every term by -5 would not be convenient in this case because the terms 2 y  and - 2  would not result in whole numbers.  You will distribute the -5 to each term in the parenthesis.
