In this lesson, you'll use three image, "09_YoungMan.jpg," "10_Friends.jpg," and "11_Portrait.jpg." Before continuing, click on the Resources tab and download these images.

Curves is the most powerful tool for adjusting the tonal range (the difference between the darkest shadows and the lightest highlights) and midtones of an image. It can also be used to adjust colors, but that won’t be covered in this course. Since Curves more complex than other tools you've used so far, you’ll need to understand the Curves dialog box options - before using Curves to edit an image. To open the Curves dialog box when editing an image, click on the Adjustment menu and choose Curves .

When you first open Curves , you’ll see a straight line from the lower left corner to the upper right corner across a grid of squares.

When you open
Curves
, start by setting three anchor points: 1 shadows, 2 midtones, and 3 highlights at the lower left, middle, and upper right boundaries of the green square overlay shown above.

Then adjust the anchors by dragging them up or down to lighten or darken.

For example, dragging the shadows anchor down darkens the shadows, while dragging it up lightens the shadows. The same is true for the midtones and highlights anchors.

Now, it's time to try Curves with some images. First, you’ll use Curves to adjust an image that is light and washed out. Open the image “09_YoungMan.jpg” in Pixlr Editor.

Click on the Adjustment menu, and choose Curves .

In the

dialog box, click to set your three anchor points.

Next, drag the shadows anchor down to darken the shadows.

Then drag the highlights anchor up to lighten the highlights.

See how the straight line becomes a curve when you drag the anchors to new positions? What
Curves
does is to blend the tonal range with the points, creating the curve you see and giving the tool its name.

When you have the

settings you want, click the
OK
button.

Save the first Curves -adjusted image for later.

Next, you’ll use Curves to adjust an image that is underexposed. Open the image “10_Friends.jpg” in Pixlr Editor.

Click on the Adjustment menu, and choose Curves .

In the
Curves
dialog box, set the shadows, midtones, and highlights anchor points.

Since this image is too dark overall, all three anchor points will need to be dragged up.

Drag the shadows anchor point up to brighten the darks.

Drag the highlights anchor point up a little. You’ll see that it only affects the very brightest parts. Be careful not to blow out the details in the white shirts.

Now, drag the midtones anchor point up to balance the relationship between the shadows and highlights.

Save the second Curves -adjusted image for later.

For the third and last practice with Curves , you’ll adjust an image that is overexposed. Open the image “11_Portrait.jpg” in Pixlr Editor.

Click on the Adjustment menu, and choose Curves .
