    A  line  is the path of a point moving through space. Lines are one of the building blocks(elements) of art. The use of horizontal, vertical, curved and diagonal lines add interest to photographs in a variety of ways. They can add drama, motion, or draw your eyes in toward certain areas in the picture.

    Horizontal Lines

    Horizontal lines convey a sense of stability, rest and serenity. The lines can be made by texture or color. Many Landscape photos have strong horizontal lines. Generally, this horizon line should not cut the through the absolute center of the picture but follow the trend of the “Rule of Thirds”.

    Vertical Lines

    Vertical lines can help to communicate the message of strength, tallness, or growth, especially vertical lines that repeat themselves in patterns. Try turning your camera sideways and lining your subject up with the lines.

    Diagonal Lines

    Diagonal lines draw the eye of the viewer through the photograph. The Rule of Diagonals states that a photograph will be more interesting if objects or subjects fall on a diagonal line. This can draw attention to different details in the photograph or add an illusion of movement. This line can be created by color, shape, texture or other objects in the photo.

    Leading Lines

    Leading Lines are lines in a photo that direct the attention of the viewer. You can use leading lines to draw the viewer's eye through the photograph towards the subject or the area which is the most significant in the scene. Look for natural or man made lines that lead you to the subject or back and forth between several areas of interest.

    Converging Lines

    Multiple Lines that come together are called converging lines. This can lead your eye to a center of focus or a subject.

    Curving Lines add their own motion to a photograph. The viewer tends to follow the curves of the line throughout the photo.
