    In order to create a good photograph, you need the right amount of light. There are three factors that affect the amount of light captured on your sensor.

    The amount of time the sensor is opened up to light is called shutter speed. A fast shutter speed will open and close in a fraction of a second and only let a little bit of light in. A slow shutter speed could be open for several seconds and lets in more light. You can also use a slow shutter speed to blur the motion.

    Aperture refers to the size of the window the camera opens to let light in. You can create different affects by changing this size of the opening. In camera talk we use fractions to describe the opening which can be confusing. Basically, the smaller the number the larger the opening because its a fraction.

    ISO refers to  a camera setting that will let you take pictures in darker settings but it uses less details. 1600 or higher ISO is good for shooting in the dark. The lower you ISO goes the more details your camera can pick up.

    Photographers try to balance all of these settings to get the best shot they can. Understanding ISO is critical to being a master photographer. It allows you to break the rules and be creative, but still get good pictures. To make the most changes to these three variables you will need to take pictures in manual mode. You can change one factor in Aperture  Priority  and Shutter  Priority modes as well if you ISO is set to Auto. On advanced cameras you can set the ISO too.
