Describe the need for water in the body.
About 60 to 70% of our bodies are made up of water. We need water to flush out waste from our bodies through perspiration, urination, and defecation. Water aids in the digestion of food, regulates our body temperature, helps with the absorption of nutrients, and prevents constipation. Water also helps lubricate and cushion our joints. It is important to keep your body hydrated especially if you live in a hot climate.
Older adults are at increased risk for dehydration. This happens when the body puts out more fluid than it takes in. As we age, our bodies are not able to store as much water as younger people. Our response to thirst is much less and we may expel more fluid due to medications. It is important to keep our clients hydrated regardless of their age.
