Sea Level
Madelyn is a scientist studying animal populations and their natural habitat’s distance from sea level. In the interactive below, use the vertical number line to drag the red points to the height you think the animals live. Notice how positive and negative numbers can describe heights above and below sea level.
+Do you want to reset the PLIX?Progress0 / 31.What was different about where you placed the sea animals compared to the birds and butterfly?
::与鸟和蝴蝶相比 你把海洋动物放在哪里有什么不同?aAll of the sea animals were above sea level. All of the birds and the butterfly were below sea level.
bAll of the birds and butterfly were closer to sea level.
::所有鸟和蝴蝶都靠近海平面cAll of the sea animals were below sea level. All of the birds and the butterfly were above sea level.
dAll of the sea animals were closer to sea level.
Out in the Cold
::在寒冷中In many real-world situations, like the scenario above, we need to measure the distance of an object from a reference point in two different directions. This distance can be expressed using integers. Integers are the positive or negative whole numbers including zero .
::在许多现实世界中,像上述情景一样,我们需要用两个不同的方向测量一个对象与参考点的距离。这种距离可以用整数表示。整数是正数或负数,包括零。Integers → {… -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …}
::整数{{{... 3, -2, -1,0,1,2,3,3}In this next interactive, you will practice finding where positive and negative numbers belong on a vertical number line by matching the thermometer level with a given temperature number for January, May, August, and December.
::在下一次互动中,您将练习在1月、5月、8月和12月将温度计水平与给定温度数相匹配,从而在垂直数字线上找到正数和负数。+Do you want to reset the PLIX?Discussion Question
::讨论问题Why do we use negative numbers when working with temperature?
::为什么我们用负数做温度工作?
The Stock Market
::股票市场There are many examples where the increase or decrease of a value is important. We see this in the stock market, in temperatures, in profits, and many real more real-world examples. Examine the value of the stocks below.
::有许多例子表明价值的增减很重要,我们从股票市场、温度、利润和许多真实的更真实的事例中看到这一点。Company Day 1 Stock Price Day 2 Stock Price Pear Phone 165.25 166.57 Boe-Wing 387.72 384.54 Mac n' Toss 81.28 80.34 cK-Mart 94.80 92.05 Mouse INC 110.13 112.21 Use the interactive to answer questions about the table above.
::使用交互方式回答有关上表的问题。
Making a Robot
You need to build and program a robot for the school science fair. The robot will need to be able to move through a maze in as few steps as possible. Before we program the robot to move through the maze, first let's program our robot to move forward and backward. Engineers describe the position of a robot relative to the starting position.
In the interactive below, you will move a robot up and down the path by clicking buttons and use positive and negative numbers to describe its movement.
+Do you want to reset the PLIX?Discussion Questions
1. Press the “Random Movement” button. How can we use numbers to identify the position of the robot?
2. Press the “Random Movement” button three times. What position is the robot in relative to the start?
3. To move the robot, you will use one command: steps
. You will enter a number between the parentheses, and the robot will move that number of steps. What numbers could you put into this command and how should they affect the robot?
Summary -
All negative numbers are less than 0. (Meaning they are also smaller than positive numbers)
If a positive number and a negative number are opposites they are the same distance away from 0.
When comparing two negative numbers, find the distance the number is away from 0. The number that is the smallest distance from zero is greater.
