  • Integers Review

    Negative numbers are used throughout our modern society Some examples of negative numbers from the  lesson are elevation, temperature, and changes in the stock market.

    Use the interactive below to see how moving the football above or below the line of scrimmage affects whether the integer is positive or negative.

    Net Yardage

    The line of scrimmage is where the football starts. The net yardage is how many yards the ball ends up past the line of scrimmage. There is only enough time on the clock to run two more plays.

    • Drag the red points to adjust the line of scrimmage and the position of the football.
    • Press the button to run the play
    • Then move the ball to another position and press the button to run the second play
    • The last button will let you run two new plays

    Which of the following are plays to get a net yardage of 0 yards?

    Select all that apply
    a

    First play: 23 yards, Second play: -23 yards

    b

    First play: 0 yards, Second play: 0 yards

    c

    First play: -23 yards, Second play: -23 yards

    Sea Level

    To compare positive numbers ,   check each  place value from left to right until you identify a greater value.

    Example

    Compare the numbers 517 and 520.

    To compare 517 and 520, start with the hundreds place. Both numbers have a 5 so move to the tens place. Since 2 is greater than 1, 520 is greater than 517.

    5 1 _ 7 < 5 2 _ 0

    This process becomes more difficult when comparing negative numbers.  Consider the context of elevation. Sea level refers to the average water level of the Earth’s oceans.  A  location above  sea level has a positive elevation.  A location below  sea level  has a negative elevation.

    In this interactive, practice comparing positive and negative elevations on a number line .

    • Once zoomed in, click on the number line again to select a range.
      ::缩放后, 单击数字行再次选择一个区域 。
    • Choose the label of the city you want to label at that elevation.

    Borrowing Money
    ::借款

    Debt is an important instance of negative numbers that  affects our economy. Debt happens when a person or organization lets another borrow money.
    ::债务是影响我们经济的负数字的重要实例,当个人或组织借钱时,债务就会发生。

     Summary
    ::摘要

    • For  positive numbers, the greater number is the number that is  farthest   from 0.
      ::就正数而言,数字越多,数字就越远。
    • For negative numbers, the greater number is the number that is closest to 0.
      ::负数数字越多,数字就越接近于0。
    • All positive numbers are greater than negative numbers.
      ::所有正数均大于负数。
