Nurses must convert medicine dosages, understand a patient’s vital signs, operate a drip machine, and much more. As a nurse, mathematical accuracy is important to the health of their patients. This is why every nurse must pass a test to ensure that they can perform the required calculations without making mistakes. In this section, you will look at  the math behind operating a drip machine.

    Negative Slopes

    Before you explore how a drip machine works, you must first understand negative slopes.  You have seen positive slopes that rise from left to right. This represents a quantity that is increasing by a constant amount. A negative slope represents a quantity that is decreasing by a constant amount.     To find a negative slope, you will take the same approach that you did for finding a positive slope . C ount the number of steps to get from one point to another. Begin by finding the slope in the image below:

    When calculating a slope, the negative may appear in the numerator or the denominator.  A negative slope is typically written with the negative in front of the fraction .

    How Nurses Use Math Continued

    Nurses use drip machines to administer medicine to a patient slowly. They begin with a large quantity of medicine, and the drip machine sends the medicine to the patient one drip at a time. One example of when a nurse might have to use a drip machine is when a patient is dehydrated. Dehydration can be caused by not drinking enough water or from an illness. It is important to stay hydrated by drinking enough water, especially during the summer months and during times of increased physical activity. To treat a patient suffering from dehydration, a nurse will use a drip machine to administer Saline, which helps increase hydration in the body.

    A nurse must give a patient 1500 mL, which holds approximately 22,500 drops, of Saline at a rate of 30 drops per minute. Graph the linear relationship that shows the volume Saline that is left, measured in drops, over time.

    To graph this relationship, use the slope-intercept form of y = m x + b .  The y - intercept , b , represents the starting amount which is 22,500 drops. The slope represents the rate at which the quantity is changing which is 30 drops per minute. Since the amount of saline in the machine is decreasing, the slope will be -30.  You can put this into the equation to obtain the following:

    The battery on a phone starts at 100%. Every hour, the battery decreases by 2.5% points. Write and graph an equation which will show the phones battery life over time.

    To write this as an equation, use slope-intercept form of y = m x + b .  The variable x  will represent the time in hours, and the variable y will represent the battery life of the phone. The y - intercept, b ,  represents the starting amount which is 100. The slope represents the rate at which the quantity is changing which is 2.5 percentage points per hour. Since the battery life is decreasing, the slope will be -2.5.  You can write this as an improper fraction to help find the rise and the run. The decimal 2.5 can be written as the mixed number  2 1 2 .   You can then convert this to the improper fraction  5 2 .   Putting this into the equation , you obtain the following:
