  • Many people get water that is originally sourced from a reservoir. Whether natural or man-made, these lakes are connected into water treatment plants and then flow into the water pipes in your home.

    During parts of the year, some aspects of this process are approximately linear. We will consider data from Lake Shasta, California's largest reservoir. 1

    Rain and Other Precipitation

    Reservoirs collect water from precipitation, either rain or snow, and runoff of melting snow and ice or rain from surrounding areas. From June to November in 2015, this process was approximately linear. We can model this  y = 0.32 x − 0.35 , where x represents the month starting at 0 for June and  y represents the inches of precipitation falling on the lake. 2

    Evaporation

    One of the effects on the amount of water in the reservoir is evaporation.  Evaporation of water occurs when the surface of liquid is exposed, which allows molecules of water to convert to water vapor  and become a gas. This is especially a problem during warmer months. From June to December in 2015, the evaporation of Lake Shasta could be modeled by y = − 2102.14 x + 12927 , where x is the months starting with 0 in June and  y represents the amount of water in acre-feet (a measure of volume). 2

    The amount of water in the reservoir varies by usage. From March to November in 2015, we could model the amount of water in the lake by  y = − 186533.88 x + 2755080.09 , where x is the months starting with month 0 in March and  y  is the amount of water in acre-feet. 2
