  • An important class of functions that are used regularly for applications, like modeling your paycheck, or the path of a home run, or the growth or decline of a population, are polynomial functions. They are so important we have already discussed some examples of polynomials extensively—horizontal lines (degree 0 polynomials) and lines with positive or negative slope (degree 1 polynomials).

    In this chapter, we will cover operations with polynomials—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We will also generalize these operations to other functions and explore an operation for functions called composition.
