    Freddie sells cookies to his neighbors each week to make some extra money. He buys ingredients for the cookies based on the amount of money he was able to make the week before.     How does a DJ switch between songs?

    When a DJ plays music for a crowd, she wants to keep the beat going as she switches between songs. Often, the two different songs have different beats so the DJ has to mix the two together by slowing one down and speeding up the other. This process of matching up the beats is called beat mixing.

    One method of beat mixing is called the 5% rule. DJs using this rule, increase or decrease the speed of the music as measured by the number of B eats P er M inute ( BPM ) by 5% until the beats match up.
