    Arya wants to make matching bracelets for her friends. She doesn't yet know the cost of the different kinds of beads. Until she finds out the , let the star beads cost a ¢   each and let the oval beads cost b ¢  each.

    How does factoring relate to the distributive property?

    • F actoring is the opposite of distributing. In distributing, a number or variable is multiplied to terms in " data-term="Parentheses" role="term" tabindex="0"> parentheses . When factoring, a number or variable is divided out of terms.

    • Factoring is an application of the distributive property  - it just acts in reverse:
      • Factoring = Un-distributing!

      Summary
    • The distributive property is when you multiply the sum of two or more numbers by another number. For example:  2 ( 1 + 3 ) = ( 2 ⋅ 1 + 2 ⋅ 3 ) = ( 2 + 6 )

    • To factor an expression find the greatest common factor of each of the terms and place it outside of the parenthesis. For example:  ( 2 + 6 ) = ( 2 ⋅ 1 + 2 ⋅ 3 ) = 2 ( 1 + 3 )
