You will find the of involving different types of prisms.  You can use the formula $\begin{array}{r}V=Bh\end{array}$  for all the prisms in this lesson, but remember that the area of the base, $\begin{array}{r}B,\end{array}$  will be different, depending on what the shape of the base is.

Step Stool Storage

A toddler's step stool has 3 steps so they can wash hands, brush teeth, etc. The particular brand that Ray and Charlotte bought has storage in it (the top step lifts up for storage).  The entire step stool is 16 inches wide.  How much storage is in the step stool if each individual step is 6 inches in length and 6 inches tall?

 In this interactive, you could have added the volume of the three steps to determine the volume of the entire step stool. You could also have found the volume of the overall prism and subtracted what was missing.  Either way, you would have ended up with the same answer.

When subtracting a smaller prism from a larger prism, like with a composite shape where a portion is removed, the placement of the smaller prism does not matter.
