    How do photographers’ capture special effects such as those seen in this light painting? In this lesson you will learn how to create a light painting and learn more about exposure.

    In light painting you set a camera to take a photo that lasts from 5-10 seconds, and in that time your run around with a bright light source that is captured in the photo. You can choose if you want to include the image of the person in the photo, by simply 'painting' the person with light during the exposure. You can modify exposure by changing either the aperture or the shutter.

    These three features control the exposure in three different ways. The exposure  triangle shows how these three variables interact with one another.

    • Aperture controls how large the opening in the shutter is to let  light fall on the sensor.

    • Shutter speed controls how long the shutter is open and how much light will shine on the sensor.

    • ISO is the light sensitivity of the film or sensor.

    In automatic mode a camera will make the best decision on how to balance these three settings to create the best image. If you switch to manual mode, you will have to decide which settings are the best. We will work in the manual mode for aperture and shutter speed in this lesson. We will leave ISO on auto to reduce our variables from 3 to 2.

    To create a light painting you will set the camera to take a photo that lasts for 2 minutes (It can be done in 30 seconds). This means that the shutter will be open for 2 minutes (shutter speed).  During that time you will run around with a bright light source that will paint as it shines on the open camera sensor.  You can choose to include the image of a person in the photo by simply 'painting' the person with light during the exposure (open shutter). We will also set the size of the opening in the camera to control the focal length (aperture).

    1. First, let’s switch to manual mode

    2. Make sure the ISO settings is on automatic mode too.

    3. Set the aperture to between f/8 0 F/6. This gives you a longer focal range.

    4. Set the shutter speed to  anywhere between 30’(seconds) and 2” (minutes).

    5. Set your camera up on a tripod in a room that can be darkened. Look through the view finder or LCD to adjust the scene where your light painting will take place.

    6. Set the automatic timer on your camera. It’s nice to have an extra person to push the button for you when you are in place and ready. You may want to practice using the timer and listening for the shutter to open and close.

    7 Once the camera flashes when the shutter opens start painting. Shine the light toward the camera. The camera should click or flash when the shutter closes.
