  • Describe and demonstrate serving and feeding a client.

    • Before serving a meal, help your client to the toilet, commode, or to use the bedpan. Be sure to wash his or her hands.

    • Food should be attractively arranged and colorful.

    • Position the client to sit up in bed or in a chair.

    • Serve the food on a tray if a table is available.

    • Place a napkin across the client's chest and under the chin.

    • Assist the client as needed; however, encourage the client to be as independent as possible. You may need to cut some of the food.

    • Use a spoon and fill only half full depending on their ability to chew.

    • Talk pleasantly with the client and encourage them to eat.
