    Recall that  a measure of center , or central tendency, is a single number used to describe a set of numeric data . It describes a typical value within the data set

    The mean and are the two most common measures of center. The mean is often called the  average

    Both the mean and the median can be used to describe a distribution's shape and spread however, sometimes the mean can be influenced by a single value called an outlier .

     When to Use the Median instead of the Mean

    Helena is a sixth grader who competes in the 100 meter hurdles. In eight track meets during the season, she recorded the following times (to the nearest one-hundredth of a second):

    • Mean - Gives you an idea of the typical value in a data set, but is not always your best measure, especially if there are outliers

    There are different times or situations in which measures of center or variability will be of better use. This depends on what you are trying to analyze - central tendency or how much variance there is within the data.
