In the interactive below, fill out each of the data points’ distance from the mean in order to see by how much each data point varies from the center.
+Do you want to reset the PLIX?-
Now find the mean of this resulting set of values (ie. the "distance from the mean" values)
.
What do think this number tells you about the data set?
The mean absolute deviation (MAD) is the mean (average) distance between each data value and the mean of the data set. It can be used to quantify the spread in the data set and also be helpful in answering in the real world.
Remember that distance is always positive, so when calculating MAD, your distances should never be negative!
What's the Variability in Building Heights?
The following data represent the height, in feet, of various buildings in the city.
Find the mean absolute deviation (MAD) for the data set.
Calculate the mean of the entire data set. Round to the nearest whole number.
C
alculate and note
the distance of each value from the mean.
Calculate the MAD by finding the mean of the
distances from the mean (
part
b)
. Round to the nearest whole number.
Use this interactive to learn how to calculate the MAD of the building heights in the city.
MAD 。+Do you want to reset the PLIX?
Does the Bus Driver Meet His Goal?
A bus route takes 45 minutes. The company's goal is a mean absolute deviation (MAD) of less than 30 seconds (0.5 minutes).
(MAD)。One driver's times for 9 runs of the route are shown. Did the bus driver meet the goal?
Use the interactive questions below to help you determine if the driver met his goal, and by how much he did or did not make it.
Engineering a Catapult
::a 工程投石图An engineer is testing two designs for a catapult. She wants the catapult to launch objects at least 150 feet. The engineer records the distances in feet for 8 trials for the two designs.
::工程师正在测试弹射脉冲的两种设计。 她希望弹射脉冲至少发射150英尺的物体。 工程师记录了两种设计8次试验的距离。Catapult A: 144, 154, 148, 156, 150, 153, 151, 150
::炮弹A:144、154、148、156、150、153、151、150Catapult B: 150, 148, 149, 144, 152, 150, 151, 147
