  The two expressions,  $\begin{array}{r}3x+3\end{array}$  and  $\begin{array}{r}4x-1\end{array}$ , are only equivalent for one value of $\begin{array}{r}x.\end{array}$  When the two expressions are set equal to each other, this value of $\begin{array}{r}x\end{array}$  is called the solution to the equation . The solution will make the equation a true statement. Since you do not know how to solve an equation just yet, start substituting in values for $\begin{array}{r}x\end{array}$  and see if the two sides are equal. When you find the value for $\begin{array}{r}x\end{array}$  that makes both sides the same value, then you have found the solution. Remember, the problem asked for the three consecutive numbers.  $\begin{array}{r}x\end{array}$  is the smallest of the three numbers, so you will need to add once to find the next number, and one again to find the last number.

  • The solution to an equation is a value that makes the two expressions  on either side of the equal sign equivalent.  Once simplified they will equal the same number.
