Types of Patterns
In addition to linear patterns, discussed in , there are many other types of patterns, and in many cases, there is no pattern at all. If the four tests below are performed, which study would most likely result in a linear pattern? How would you expect the patterns in the other studies to look? How could this information be useful to a scientist?
The temperature in New York City over a 3 year period.
The length of a person’s hair compared to the number of hours a day he watches television.
Pressure as you dive under the sea.
The altitude of a plane over the course of a flight.
Progress0 / 51.The altitude of a plane from the beginning to the end of the flight is recorded. The data is used to graph a scatterplot. How would you expect the pattern of the graph to look?
您如何看待图的图案 ?aThe graph will increase, level off, then decrease.
bThe data would form a linear pattern.
cThe graph will increase, decrease, and repeat.
dThere is no correlation in this data.
Non-Linear Patterns
E xamine some graphs that produce patterns that aren’t linear. The first example of this is a scatter plot that displays the height (measured in centimeters) of a sunflower over time (measured in days).
Next, look at a graph that measures energy consumption (measured in kilowatts per hour) in New Hampshire over time (measured in hours).
This scatter plot may appear to have no relation but watch what happens when you connect the dots.
Discussion Questions
The New Hampshire Consumption Over Time graph is an example of a pattern graph. A pattern graph has one general part of the graph which repeats over and over.
How can you explain the pattern based on the context?
Who would this graph be helpful to and what could be done with the information?
The scatter plot below has no relation. This means that the and values are completely unrelated and will have no discernible pattern. The points on this graph are completely generated at random . Use the interactive to generate sets of random points.
+Do you want to reset the PLIX?
Clusters Introduction
A cluster is a group of values that occur around the same location on the graph. A cluster can mean that certain inputs are likely to produce specific results or that the values may affect each other. It is important to be able to recognize and interpret clusters when looking at a scatter plot. The scatter plot below shows a linear pattern and displays a cluster at the bottom left of the graph.
Cluster Interpretation
::群组口译Below is a graph that compares the year to the eruption size from the Cerro Negro volcano in Nicaragua. Pay close attention to the clusters and try to determine what the cause of these clusters could be.
::下面是尼加拉瓜Cerro Negro火山爆发规模与该年相比的图表。 请密切注意这些群集, 并尝试确定这些群集的原因。Summary
::摘要-
A cluster is a group of values that occur around the same location on the graph.
If a relationship forms a straight line, the trend is referred to as a linear pattern.
If a relationship does not form a straight line, the trend is referred to as a non-linear pattern.
