  • Comparisons in Science

    Comparing objects helps to understand them. Astronomers measure distances of stars to help understand their location relative to Earth so that the stars can be mapped. In medicine, cell sizes are compared to determine whether or not cells are healthy. Working in one of these fields will all but guarantee that you will have to compare numbers in scientific notation.

    Discussion Question

    Rob is an astronomer and was looking at the stars. He found one star which was  9.7 × 10 12 miles away while another star was  4.7 × 10 15  miles away. He wanted to know which star was further away. Without rewriting the numbers in standard form, which star do you think is further away? Discuss your thoughts in class or  with your classmates.

    Comparing Big Numbers

    To compare numbers in scientific notation you will need to use the following steps:

    1. Compare the .
    2. If the exponents are the same compare the coefficients.

    You will need to compare the exponents first because the exponent represents place value .

    • The number  9.7 × 10 12  is equivalent to 9,700,000,000,000.
    • The number  4.7 × 10 15  is equivalent to 4,700,000,000,000,000.

    It does not matter how large the coefficient is if the one exponent is larger than the other because this means that one place value is larger than the other. If the exponents are the same, then the numbers have the same place value. In this case, you would have to compare the coefficients with the greater coefficient representing the greater number.

    Discussion Question

    If two exponents are the same, why would the coefficient tell us which number is greater?

    Comparing Really Small Numbers

    The average healthy red blood cell measures at around 8 × 10 6  meters in diameter. If a red blood cell has a significantly larger diameter, it could signal that the patient has an illness. Mikaela is a doctor who was checking the red blood cells of a patient. She measured a red blood cell with a diameter of 1.01 × 10 7  meters in diameter. Is this cell larger or smaller than average? To determine this she will use the same approach that you used with large numbers.

    1. Compare the exponents.
    2. If the exponents are the same compare the coefficients.

    When you compare the exponents -6 and -7 you can see that -6 is greater than -7. This means that 8 × 10 6  is greater than 1.01 × 10 7 . The cell with a diameter of 1.01 × 10 7 meters is smaller than average and is likely a healthy cell.

    Mikaela measured another red blood cell and found the diameter to be 9 × 10 6  meters. Is this cell larger or smaller than the average red blood cell with a diameter of 8 × 10 6 ? If you compare the exponents you find that they are equal. However, 9 is greater than 8 so 9 × 10 6  is greater than 8 × 10 6 . This means that the cell with a diameter of 9 × 10 6 meters is larger than normal and could potentially be unhealthy. In this case, Mikaela would likely look at more red blood cells to see if the diameter is a trend or an outlier.

    Why is it enough to compare exponents if they are not equal?

    While meters are the generally accepted unit for distance in science, telling someone that a cell is  9 × 10 6  meters long can be difficult to interpret. Use the interactive below to choose a more appropriate unit.

    Which unit do you think would be more appropriate than the meter? Why?

    Comparing Numbers in Different Forms

    To compare numbers from different forms you will need to convert them to the same form. It generally does not matter whether you choose to convert the numbers to or standard form. Choose the option that you feel makes the most sense, is easiest, and fits the situation best.

    Example

    Which is greater: 4.26 × 10 10  or 4,260,000,000?

    T o compare these numbers, convert 4,260,000,000 into scientific notation. You will have to move the decimal 9 places to the left giving you  4.26 × 10 9 . You can now answer the question using the steps you learned in the previous activities.

    Which is greater: 4.26 × 10 10  or 4.26 × 10 9 ?

    1. Compare the exponents.
    2. If the exponents are the same compare the coefficients.

    If you compare the exponents, 10 is greater than 9 so  4.26 × 10 10  is greater than 4.26 × 10 9 .
